Terms of service

Engram is free to use. These terms explain the few rules, what the tutor subscription includes, and the limits of what we can promise.

These terms cover the Engram desktop app, the optional tutor subscription, and this website. Engram is made by Itarin (“we”, “us”). By installing or using Engram you agree to these terms. Items shown like [this] are decisions still to be made.

Using Engram

  • You can download Engram and use it for free, on as many of your own computers as you like, for personal, educational or work study.
  • You may not sell, rent or redistribute Engram, or pass off a modified copy as the official app, without our permission. [Confirm the licence you want, for example whether redistribution is allowed]
  • Download Engram only from this website or its official release page, so you get the genuine files.

Your content

Everything you create in Engram (notes, cards, quizzes, chats and so on) belongs to you. It’s stored on your computer, and we have no access to it.

Because your data is stored only on your computer, you are responsible for backing it up. See Your data and backups. We can’t recover lost data.

Only import or use material you have the right to use, such as your own notes, or decks and images you’re allowed to copy.

The tutor subscription

  • The AI tutor chat is an optional paid add-on: $5 per month, with the first month free for new subscribers. The price and any taxes shown at checkout are what you pay.
  • After the free month, your subscription renews every month and is charged to your payment method until you cancel.
  • You can cancel at any time with Manage subscription in Engram. When you cancel, the tutor stays unlocked until the end of the period you’ve already paid for, and you won’t be charged again.
  • Refunds: [state your refund policy, for example no refunds for partial months except where required by law]
  • Payments are processed by Stripe, under Stripe’s terms.
  • The subscription pays for access to the tutor chat in Engram. It does not include AI usage. You connect your own AI provider, and any charges from that provider are between you and them.
  • We may change the price with at least [30 days’] notice. A change applies from your next billing period after the notice.
  • You need an internet connection at least every 4 days for Engram to confirm your subscription. The tutor locks if it can’t, and unlocks once it can check again.

AI providers and AI answers

  • The tutor and AI-written quizzes send your requests to a third-party AI provider that you choose. Your use of that provider is governed by its own terms and privacy policy.
  • AI answers can be wrong. The tutor may give incorrect, incomplete or outdated information. Check anything important with a reliable source, and don’t rely on it for medical, legal, financial or safety decisions.
  • You’re responsible for the API keys you use and any costs they incur.

Acceptable use

Please don’t:

  • try to get around the tutor subscription, or interfere with, overload or attack the subscription service
  • use Engram or its services to break the law or anyone’s rights
  • misuse the sign-in system, for example by requesting codes for email addresses that aren’t yours

We may suspend a subscription that’s used this way.

No warranty

Engram is provided “as is”. We work to make it reliable, but we can’t promise it will be free of bugs, always available, or suitable for every purpose. This includes the subscription service and any third-party services Engram connects to.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we’re not liable for any indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data, arising from your use of Engram. Our total liability to you for any claim related to Engram is limited to the amount you paid us for the tutor subscription in the 12 months before the claim. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under consumer law that can’t be limited.

Changes and ending

We may update these terms. We’ll change the date at the top of this page, and for significant changes we’ll give notice on this website. You can stop using Engram at any time by uninstalling it and cancelling any subscription.
